“An act to incorporate a Congregational Parish in the town of Alfred… Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That… James Garey, Ebenezer Garey… Joseph Garey, John Garey… Joel Allen, jun… together with all other inhabitants of the said town of Alfred, being of the denomination of Christians called Congregationalists… are hereby incorporated into a religious society by the name of The Congregational Parish in Alfred… passed March 4, 1809”. [1]

Ebenezer was active in the church and he and Jeremiah Moulton played the bass-viol while the men’s choir sang. Rose Garey was the first woman to sing in the choir in the old Congregational meeting house. [2]

Ebenezer was the coroner for Sanford from 1828 to 1831.[3] Ebenezer is listed in the 1840 census as living in Barrington, NH but had returned to Alfred by the time of the 1850 census.

Betsey Deshon and her brother Ben were living with their grandparents and uncle Tim in July of 1850 and returned to Wakefield by the time the census was taken there in Sept.

Ebenezer had died by the time of the 1860 census and Susannah lived just long enough to be listed as living with her son Timothy and his family at their home in Alfred.

On Ebenezer’s headstone and that of his son Timothy, he is referred to as Gen. Ebenezer Garey. He is listed as being a first lieutenant in the Sanford militia from 1815 until 1821, however, I cannot find where he ever achieved the rank of General.[4] He was also listed as being a Deputy Sheriff in 1827-8.[5] I wonder if he may have been involved in another organization (the Salvation Army comes to mind) where he was given this title. As noted above he was listed as Col. Ebenr Garey in the 1820 census. Ebenezer was also listed as being the local coroner from 1828 until 1831.[6]

The children of Ebenezer have been proved in a round about way. Patience’s parentage was given on her death certificate. For the discussion about Margaret see Stephen DESHON. Timothy’s date of birth and parentage is given on his headstone. Jane H. was living with her parents at the time of the 1850 census. Lucy was living with her parents at the time of the 1850 census and then lived with her brother Timothy.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ebenezer by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ebenezer:

The only source that I have been able to locate that Moses E. of Dover was the grandson of Ebenezer Garey of Sanford is the biographical sketch in the "Biographical Review" of 1898. It states that Ebenezer spent “his last days in Dover, where he died December 8, 1844, aged seventy years. The maiden name of Ebenezer’s wife was Ruth Gowen. She died November 14, 1853, aged seventy-seven.” Well, that ain’t right. As they say, Ebenezer and Susanna’s names and dates of death are “cast in stone” and corroborated in other documents. Now, was there another Ebenezer in Sanford at the time who married Ruth and who died in Dover? If so, where is the data on these folks? The "Biographical Review" is not the most reliable secondary source and I would list Moses’s parents as being uncertain at this point.
