Like his father, John Jr. was one of the Snowshoe Men and served in Capt. John Harmon’s company at the siege of Louisbourg in 1745.[1] John Garey Jr., laborer, was listed as a settler in Sanford in 1749.[2] However, I suspect the family did not move there until a few years later as John & Mary’s son John was born in York in 1750 and their son Ebenezer was born in Arundel in 1752.
The marriage record for John and Mary is interesting:
No. 21. John Garey junr, and Mary Shaw both of York intend Marriage Entred May 16th 1747. Forbid by her Fathr and so never Published. [3]
Oops… perhaps the problems between Mr. Shaw and John was a reason for the family moving to Sanford.
John and Mary’s family are listed in the York records:
John Garey Son of John Garey his Children born in York of Mary his Wife Daughter of Samuel Shaw viz
1. Joseph Garey - born March. 29. 1748
2. John Garey - born Octor 28. 1750
3. Ebenezer Garey - born in Arundel Augt. 18. 1752 [4]
