Biography

Gertrude was initially listed with her birth family in the 1880 U.S. Census at age 6 (misspelled Garypie). [1]

In the 1892 New York State Census, there is a Gertrude Garrippy (age about 16) who was living among a large number of teenage girls with the Sisters at St. Joseph Orphanage in Brooklyn, New York. Louis Gariepy was killed by the train in 1881. Gertrude's mother Mary was left with five children to support, all very young. [2]

Gertrude Gariepy has been found in the St. Patrick Convent in Manhattan, New York in the 1900 U.S. Census. While the FamilySearch.org summary only lists her as "inmate", the census document itself gives the name of the convent and her occupation as "Sister". Gertrude's religious name is not listed. [3]

In 1920, at the age of 45, Sister Mary Gertrude is still listed among the teachers at St. Patrick's Convent in New York City on Prince Street. [4]

In 1930, Gertrude (age 56), a Sister of Charity (Sisters of St. Joseph), was teaching at the New York Foundling Hospital in Manhattan, New York. Her surname is miss-indexed in Ancestry.com as Garsisy for the 1930 U.S. Census of Manhattan, New York, but the original document is legible as "Gariepy". Note that her father's birth place was given as French Canada, which means Quebec or Lower Canada. (This was also poorly transcribed in Ancestry.com as France, Canada). [5]

Research Notes

I believe that the death record found as GARIEPY, GERT NUN is that of Sister Mary Gertrude Gariepy. She died in Yonkers at the advanced age of 81 on 25 Dec 1955. [6]

It may be very difficult to find Gertrude's burial record without a knowledge of exactly how her religious name was inscribed on the headstone. Until the late 20th century, most often the Religious Sisters of one Order or convent were buried in the same cemetery section under their religious name(s) and often with only their surname at birth, but sometimes with their given name as well.
