"Born on September 14, 1860 in West Salem, Wisconsin to pioneer parents, Hamlin Garland's literary career began when, in his early twenties, he moved to Boston. His first success, Main-Travelled Roads, was published in 1891 and began a string of unflinchingly realistic depictions of frontier settler life that culminated with A Son of the Middle Border and A Daughter of the Middle Border, for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. In 1899, Garland married Zulime Taft, the sister of Chicago sculptor Laredo Taft. Hamlin and Zulime had two daughters, Mary Isobel (Garland) Lord and Constance "Connie" (Garland) Doyle. Hamlin Garland was a popular lecturer on literary topics and, in addition to his prairie and western writing, he maintained a life-long fascination with psychic phenomena. He died on March 4, 1940, in Hollywood California."
"Several of Garland's key concepts are especially relevant today. For example, awestruck by the wilderness, in 1896 Garland utters a plea for the vanishing West: 'Bring back the Utes who broken-heartedly fired their forests in the face of the white men and retreated! Bring back the men to whom this land belongs! Silence the saw and engine; let there be one unapproachable wilderness left in America, one spot unmarred by greed and hatred!' (At the time Garland wrote these words, the U.S. had just three national parks - Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Sequoia.)"
