Biography

Azariah was born in Lower Island Cove, Newfoundland, to John Garland and Catherine Sparkes. He was baptised there on 21 June 1835^[1][2].

He married Sarah Jane Snelgrove on 3 October 1858 in Lower Island Cove^[3] and they had five children together:

• Susannah (1859 - 1860)
• John James (1862 - 1900)
• William Henry (1864 - 1890)
• Rebecca (1867 - 1947)
• Elisha Snelgrove (1869 - 1917)

After Sarah's death in January 1884 he married a widow, Janet (Kerr) Nisbet, on 17 September 1884 in St John's, Newfoundland^[4]. They had one daughter: Elizabeth Thompson Kirkland (1886 - 1955).

He died on 7 April 1895^[5] (or possibly 10 April per newspaper announcement^[6]) in Lower Island Cove.

Note on daughter Elizabeth's baptismal record: "Married 1884 PRESBY, Azariah Garland is believed to have been baptized 1835 at Lower Island Cove, Conception Bay, the son of John GARLAND & Catherine SPARKES: he was a widower. Janet was the widowed sister in law of Alexander Nisbet, and was of Ayr, Scotland."
