IMMIGRATION: Went to Ky. from Ireland in 1857, according to obituary
in Lexington, Ky. Herald, Fri., Dec. 10, 1897. According to naturalizations
records, arrived at port of NY in 1856
OCCUPATION: On first arriving, was attendant in Lunatic Asylum;(according to
1860 Ky. census records and 1859 City Directory; later became 'watchman' there(1864-65 Lexington City
Directory; later watchman at Phoenix Hotel, Lexington (1867 City Direct.); by
1873, ran grocery store, bar, boarding house (according to one of his
obituaries, at one point he ran two grocery stores, one at Main and Jefferson,
and the other at the corner of Jefferson and Third.; was member of the
Lexington City Council from 1883
CAUSE OF DEATH: After operation for rheumatism.
Possible Sibling: In 1859, both he and a Peter Garland were attendants at the Lunatic Asylum, according to the City Directory.
OTHER: According to several sources, he was a cousin of John McElroy,
sherrif of Fayette Co. May also have been related to Philip, John, and Owen
McKee; surely was friend of Philip's, who lived in his boarding house and
mentioned him in his will. Spouse was Catherine HOULIHAN
Emigration: A Richard Garland, age 16, laborer, arr. N.Y. 26 Feb 1849, on the
Columbus from Liverpool. Probably not him, since according to naturalization record he did not arrive in U.S. until 1856.
Naturalization: Fayette County , Kentucky Order Book, v. 17, p. 558, Dec. Court, 1865: Richard Garland, 25, 5' 9', fair complexion, hazel eyes, high beard, came to the port of New York in 1856, entered the u.S. under the age of 18 years.
