Biography

Nicholas was born 1 September 1741, and he was baptized 9 September 1741 at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London[1][2].

He married Elizabeth Spratt on 31 October 1768 at Salisbury, Wiltshire[3]

He died 8 September 1828 and was buried in German Lutheran Church in the Savoy[4]. The remains of those buried at the Lutheran Church were moved to New Southgate Cemetery into an area now referred to as the Queen Victoria Vaults (page 4 of Southgate District Civic Trust Newsletter 198 Oct 2006). Nicholas is now buried under Vault XIX[5]

Occupation

  • 1768 (marriage license) Gent;
  • 1775 Robe-maker (advertisement for a nursery maid);
  • 1777 & 1788 Mantua-maker (duties for apprentice indenture);
  • 1790 Articles of clerkship of son Frederick: mantua maker of King Street Bloomsbury;
  • 1825 East India Company investor: 'Mr Nicholas Garling, 6 Russell Street, Covent Garden' [6]
  • 1828 Esq, gentleman (death notices)

He is incorrectly referred to as an 'architect' in his son Frederick Garling's biography in the Australian Dictionary of Biography. (Possibly confusion with his nephew, Henry Garling, a surveyor)
