Annie Marie Garneau was possibly born in Quebec on Oct. 9, 1888, but her birth record indicates Coos, NH. [1] She was the third of 12 known children and the second of eight known daughters of Jean Baptiste Grenon and Marie Augustine Labossiere. No record of her birth has been found in Canada. Born in Canada emigrating circa 1900 with parents and siblings through Vermont. Vital records shows birth recorded incorrectly as Berlin, New Hampshire Her family was from Stanhope, Quebec and the two oldest children were definitely born there.
Annie Garneau later moved to Roxbury, Maine with her family and is found there in the 1900 US census. 1900 US Census Maine Oxford Roxbury ED 177 Sheet 10B Lines 58-66: John Garneau, 43 - day laborer; Augustine, (nee Labossiere), 36; Seven Garneau children: Josephine, 15; Willie, 13; Annie, 10; Oma, 7; Rose, 4; Exzilda, 2; Clara, 4 months. Mother reported she had nine children and two have died. [2] Census date: June 18, 1900.
Annie Garneau married William F. Canwell at Roxbury, Maine on Dec. 5, 1906. [3] [4] He was the son of Levi H. Canwell and Elmira Pratt. Annie and William lived the rest of their lives in Maine and had five known children.
In 1910, they have had one son, Clarence, five months and William's brother, Reuben and his widowed father, Levi are living with them. [5] Census date: April 20, 1910.
By 1920, they have had all of their known children. 1920 US Census Maine Oxford Roxbury ED 103 Sheet 12B Lines 63-69: William Canwell, 41 - farm manager; Annie M. Canwell, (born in NH), 31; five Canwell children: Clarence L., 10; Ada E., 8; Lillian M., 6; William J., 2 1/2; Rosa L., 1 1/2. [6] Census Date: Jan. 28, 1920. This census records Annie as born in New Hampshire.
In 1930, they are still at Roxbury, Maine and have three children at home and one granddaughter. 1930 US Census Main Oxford Roxbury ED 9-44 Sheet 2A Lines 9-14: Will T. (or J. ?? ), Canwell, 49 - general farm laborer; Annie M., 42; Lillian, 16; John W., 12 (WIlliam J. ); Rosie A., 11; and a grand son, Harry Raymond, 1 Y, 10M. [7] Census date: April 21, 1930. The grandson is the child of their daughter, Ada and her husband, Harry Earle Raymond.
By 1940, all of their five children have left home, but for this census, they have three grand children with them. As two have the surname, Raymond, these would be their daughter Ada's children. 1940 US Census Main Oxford, Roxbury ED 9-46 Sheet 1B Lines 79-80: William Canwell, 58 - farm labourer; Annie Canwell, 50. [8] and continued on the next page, sheet 2A, lines 1-3: Harry E. Raymond, 11; Theresa Raymond, 10; and Barbara Canwell, 8, daughter of Lillian.
William Canwell died in 1952 in Roxbury, Maine and he was buried at the True Cemetery, South Livermore, Androscoggin, Maine. [9] He was about 74 years old.
Annie Garneau died in April 1976 at South Paris, Maine and is buried at the True Cemetery. [10] She was 88 years old.
