Dr. W.J. Garner
November 18, 1864 February 20, 1898
William Joseph Garner was born in Darlington District, S.C., near the present Syracuse, the son of James Nathaniel and Joanna Wright Garner.
Dr. Garner received his medical degree at the University Medical Center of New York on March 8, 1888; after a short period of internship in a New York hospital, he returned to Darlington, S.C., in June of the same year to commence his practice. Within two years, he had opened a drug store…but the steady growth of his practice compelled him to sell this business to Dr. J. A. Boyd in early 1891.
In 1891, Dr. Garner took a post graduate course in New York in diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat; the following year he spent several months in Europe, studying in Vienna. He gained the reputation of being a well posted young physician, and again in 1896, did post-graduate work in New York, specializing in diseases of women and children.
During his career, he was a member of the Pee Dee Medical Association; Darlington County Physician; surgeon for the Darlington Guards and for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company; a member of the State Board of Health; and for a short time, he was senior partner in the medical firm of Garner & Boyd, formed shortly after Dr. J. E. Boyd’s graduation from medical school in 1894.
In 1897, Dr. Garner married Carrie Louise Montgomery, who was left a young widow only a few months after their marriage.
