Biography

Jackson was born about 1820 in Greene County, Alabama. He was the son of John Garner and Nancy Head. [1]

He had 13 children with his first wife Celia who he married November 13, 1842 in Bibb County, Alabama. [2]

After her death he married Eliza and had 6 more children. According to Fayette County, Alabama Marriage and Probate Records, he married Eliza A. Hamm in Fayette County, Alabama on January 7, 1868 in the house of John Malloy. [1]

Compiled by Betty C Wiltshire, this marriage is recorded in the courthouse page 138. Jackson Garner - Eliza A. Hamm January 7, 1868 at the home of John Malloy

Jack Garner raised cotton. He took 40 bales of cotton to market. When he delivered the last two and was ready to get paid for them all, he found that the company that he had been selling to was bankrupt and he couldn't get paid. This caused him to lose everything that he had. He raised 19 of his own children and three grandchildren.

He passed away in Tennessee sometime after March 29, 1884 which is the date his youngest son was born. It is believed by family members that he passed away in the year 1897 in Dresden, Weakley County, Tennessee.

Research Notes

Note: There is a "Will" for a J. G. Garner that was probated in Gibson County, Tennessee on July 19, 1898 but it is for John G. Garner who was born 1868 in Hardin County, Tennessee and died 1898 in Gibson County, Tennessee not for Jackson George Garner. [2],

Children per interview with Ivie Lou Garner Insco on 3 Dec. 1998. Raised two of his grandchildren - Jackson David Garner and Mary Alice Crockett. Mary Alice married a Taylor but are not sure who he was or who her parents were.

He was listed as John in the his marriage record to Celia Ann Brewer.

The parents listed for Jackson may not be his actual parents. They are marked uncertain as more research is needed to prove or disprove their connection. John Garner (d. 1865) did not mention Jackson G. in his will. (There were three Jackson George Garners in Bibb, AL at the same time.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jackson by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jackson:

Sharon,

John Garner's headstone says "J. G. Garner 1868-1898 and Della his wife 1871-1893" The will for J. G. Garner mentions "...Eliza Garner my present wife during her widowhood..." Eliza died March 1917 in Weakley, TN while visiting the home of her daughter. She was buried at Corinth Cemetery. Weakley Co.

Sharon,

Della was his first wife 1871-1888, his second wife was Margaret Eliza Turnbow aka Eliza. She is listed as Eliza a widow on the 1900 Gibson County, Tennessee with their two daughters. John G. Garner middle name is Gibson.

I have a question regarding John and Nancy Head being Jackson George Garner's father as much as I would like to share this line!

On the estate cover file for JOHN GARNER d. 1865 there is the following statement: "See: James Jackson Garner Estate Papers. He was also son of John Garner" There is no mention of a "Jackson George" as heir.

In estate papers for JIMMY JACKSON GARNER d. 1864, there is no mention of a brother named Jackson George In the estate papers where he names brothers and sisters.

Would appreciate any information that could help clarify Jackson's ancestry. Sharon
