Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

William Garner was born about 1816, and christened April 21st, 1816 at Portico, Eccleston (Catholic). He was the tenth child of George & Elizabeth Garner. He grew up to be a labourer, and married Elizabeth Fildes on July 26th 1840 at All Saints, Rainford (Anglican). It was a first marriage for both; George was of age but Elizabeth was a minor. Both were living in Eccleston, and their fathers were George Garner and William Fildes, both labourers. The witnesses were James Woodward and Esther Barnes. James was the only one of the four signatories who could sign his name.

In 1841 they were living in Springfield Row, near William's mother Elizabeth & brother John, and and had a 7-month-old son George. Later a daughter Frances, and son William were born.

Tragically, Elizabeth (Fildes) Garner, William's wife, died in 1850, within a few days of their daughter Frances and their son William. In 1851, William and his remaining son George were living with William's sister and brother-in-law Ann & Miles Dodson.

William's niece Elizabeth Holland and her husband stood as godparents for two of William's children, who were christened at St Mary Lowe House (Catholic) church. William & Mary Seddon (nee Fildes) were godparents of another - Mary may have been a relative of Sarah (Fildes) Garner who was the wife of William's nephew George.

William died in 1880, and was buried on 24 Apr 1880 in St Helens Cemetery, with his age recorded in both the death registration and burial record as 62. A gravestone in Windleshaw Chantry is inscribed "The Burial Place of William and Elizabeth Garner" and below has a date of death for Elizabeth, but it seems William wasn't buried there. Section 23, where he was buried according to the St Helens Cemetery records, is however adjacent to Windleshaw Chantry.
