Biography

John Garner was born in about 1766 in Warwickshire England, according to the 1841 England Census record. His birth year was calculated from his age of 77 years at death, in 1843.

John Garner worked as a Baker at Birmingham, and his name was listed in Robson's 1839 Trade Directory of Birmingham. [1]

John Garner's wife, Mrs Mary Garner, passed away on 2 April 1841 at Darwin street, Aston, aged 74 years. [2] She was buried at the Holy Trinity Church, Bordesley, on 9 April 1841. The death certificate and burial record both state, "wife of John Garner of Darwin Street, age 74 years." [3]

The 1841 England Census was taken on 6 June 1841. John Garner was living at Darwin Street, Aston, and was the head of the household. His son-in-law, Samuel Stainton, and his daughter, Mrs Martha Stainton, and their four children lived in his home. [4] All were born in the County of Warwickshire. The record was indexed on Ancestry.com with surname spelt as "Stanton".

John Garner passed away on 13 January 1843, at Darwin Street, Aston, Warwickshire, England. [5] He was buried at the Holy Trinity Church at Bordesley, on 18 January 1843. [6]

The newspaper death notice stated, "On 13 January 1843, aged 77, much respected, Mr John Garner, a baker, of Darwin Street." [7]

John Garner wrote a Will which was proved on 17 May 1843, and one Executor was his daughter, Mrs Martha Stainton. [8] John Garner made provision for his two adult children, leaving Mrs Martha Stainton the dwelling, in Darwin Street, and Thomas Garner was left two dwellings, in Birchall Street.

  • John Garner's daughter, Martha Garner, married Samuel Stainton on 14 June 1819, at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Aston.
  • The surname "Stainton" was recorded as "Stanton" on the 1841 Census.
  • John Garner had a son called George Garner who was living in Australia in 1857. John Garner's grandchildren, John Garner, 24, and Eliza Garner, 17, travelled on the "Monica" in 1857 to Australia. On the Shipping Record, an entry beside Eliza Garner's name states, "An Uncle, George Garner, living Crown Street Woolloomooloo."
  • John Garner left his son Thomas Garner a messuage, or dwelling house, in Birchall Street. Three of Thomas Garner and Martha Fenney's children were born at Birchall Street, Aston : Caleb Garner in 1844, Thomas Garner in 1846, and Emma Jane Garner in 1849.
  • Thomas Garner, Tailor, is listed at 9 Birchall Street, on 1852 Slater's Directory of Birmingham.
  • It is not known if John Garner's wife, Mrs Mary Garner, was the mother of Mrs Martha Stainton (nee Garner), Thomas Garner, and George Garner, as Baptism records have not been located with this information, for these three people.
