Albert was born in 1897. He is the son of George Garratt and Mary Higgins. He was christened Albert Joseph on 21 Dec 1897 in Montreal, but his father was not present. His godmother was Mary Ryan.[1] Albert Joseph Garratt married Nightly Ball on 31 Jan 1920 in Montreal, Canada.[2] He crossed the border into the US on 3 Jan 1926. He became a naturalised citizen of the USA on 15 Feb 1926 at Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States at which time his description included a fair complexion, height 5’8”, blue eyes and missing the tip of the third finger on his left hand. His Naturalization certificate states his date of birth 4 May 1897, but his WWI CEF papers have 4 May 1899.[3]
