His wife, Maria A., 34 (b. 1885), also born in Italy, immigrated in 1905. Their children at home were born in MA. They are Ida C., 12 (b. 1907), Mary, 11 (b. 1908), James, 8 (b. 1911), Mildred, 5 (b. 1914), Peter, 1.5 (b. 1918). Also in the home are Michele’s brother, Peter G., 34 (b. 1885), from Italy, who immigrated in 1906, and nephew James P., 10 (b. 1909), born in MA. Michele owns his home. He owns his business: he is an ice retail merchant. On the line for his brother’s occupation, it says he works on his own account, but not what line of work he’s in.[1]

Mary’s father was born in Italy and her mother is French Canadian. Peter immigrated in 1900. He is the proprietor of a trucking company. His son, James, is a restaurant chef.
Michael Garreffi, 51 (b. 1879), born in Italy, owns his home, worth $4,000. Living with him are his wife, Maria, 45, also born in Italy, and children Mary, 21 (b. 1909), James, 19 (b. 1911), Carmella, 15 (b. 1915), Peter, 12 (b. 1918), Frank, 10 (b. 1920), Theresa, 7 (b. 1923), Tony, 5 (b. 1925), and Michael, 1 year and 9 months old (b. 1918), all born in Massachusetts. Michael, who immigrated in 1899, owns his own business as an ice man. His wife immigrated in 1905. Mary is a helper in a cotton waste factory. James is an ice man on a wagon.[3]
In the 1940 federal census of Springfield, taken 24 April, Michael Gareffi heads a household at 67 Marble St. He is 63 (b. 1877), born in Italy, as was his wife Mary, 54 (b. 1886). Their son at home is Peter, 20 (b. 1920), born in MA. Michael and Peter are dealers in ice and fuel.[4]
