Biography

Jessie Garritt was born on April 21, 1903 in Islington, London, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of William James Garrett a fruit seller, and Charlotte Eaton, a hawker. ^[1] She was christened at St Anne Church in Poole's Park in Islington on May 20, 1903. ^[2]

The early 1900's were a difficult time in London, and their family, like many other, utilized the Islington and Hackney workhouses. ^[3]

In 1913 Jessie was admitted to Dr. Barnado's British Home Children program on August 18, 1909 and was brought to Canada aboard the SS Corinthian. She was destined for Hazelbrae, Peterborough, Ontario. ^[4] Her brother William George Garrett had been sent with the same program in 1910 and was living near Oshawa, Ontario.

She immigrated to the United States as an adult. In 1935, when she was 32 years old, she had a daughter in Buffalo, New York where she lived. ^[5]

She married Niels Feldborg Nielsen, a Danish immigrant and sailor, and her daughter's father when his divorce was complete, on October 16, 1937 in Erie, Pennsylvania, United States. ^[6]

During the 1940 United States census she was 36 years old and living with her husband Niels (33) and their daughter (3) at their home in Buffalo, New York. Niels was employed as a truck driver for a transportation company. ^[6]

Her husband passed away in 1986 in Pinellas, Florida^[7]

Jessie Nielsen died on June 25, 1991 in Saint Petersburg, Pinellas, Florida, United States at the age of 88 years. ^[8]

NIELSEN, JESSIE, 88, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (June 25, 1991) at Bon Secours-Maria Manor. She was born in London, England, and came here in 1969 from Buffalo, N.Y. Locally, she was a member of Meadowlawn Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Gruber, Williamsville, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Lt.
