The first Amelia County courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1766.[1]
The court house in Buckingham County, Virginia burned in 1869 so finding documents and original sources is difficult.
Stephen Garrett, a Frenchman, settled in Buckingham county, Va. His children were — Stephen, John, David, Elijah, William, Mary, and Elizabeth. [2]
Stephen's father, John, died between 1741 and 1744. John's will was dated February 15, 1741/42.
Will of John Garrott of Amelia County, Virginia left following items to his son, Stephen:
Land and a young horse or mare when Stephen reaches twenty one.
January 1753/4: Stephen Garrett sold 55 acres to William Vasser
July 1753: Stephen Garrett sold 55 acres to William Vasser
July 1754: Stephen Garrett sold 55 acres to William Vasser
Stephen married first in 1753 Amelia Co., VA to Louise D'Aubigne b: 1737 in Amelia Co., VA
Child
1. John Garrett b: 1754 in Virginia md. 1779 in Buckingham Co., VA to Ann Daniel. Had children William d'Aubigne[3] (b. 2 Sep 1782/d. 14 Mar 1860) and John Daniel Garrett.
Some family trees also show Stephen and Louisa also had a son, Elijah.
Stephen married second ca 1754 Buckingham Co., VA to Magdalene Bernard b: 08 JUN 1735 in Manakintown, Powhatan Co., VA or Amelia Co., VA. She was the daughter of David and Anne Bernard.[4]
Some researchers believe Magdalene and Louisa were the same person, Louise D'Aubigne Magdalene Bernard. In that case, Stephen would have only been married once.
If all the following children are Magdalene's, some of the dates are in error. Lots of documentation is needed here.

Oma Smith lists only 9 children for Stephen and Magdalene. Oma omits Thomas, Anna, Abraham, and Isaac.[10]
The 1790 census of Buckingham County was reconstructed from tax records:
Garrott,
U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560 - 1900
U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Application, 1889 - 1970
Stephen Burton Garrett's resting place is unknown. [12]
Many spelling variations existed for the surname in early records including Garrott, Garret.
Much documentation is needed to verify the accuracy of this family because there's such a difference in opinion of children's names and dates of marriages and births. Some say John had only one child, John, by his first wife, Louise D'Aubigine. Others say he also had a son, John, by his second wife, Magdelene Bernard.
Some also say Stephen was born in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, Virginia. The Prince George Co., VA birth place comes from 1000 YEARS OF GARRETT FAMILY HISTORY.
An interesting account of the Garretts by Ken Choate, but sources are needed.
Discussion about proven and unproven children of Stephen Garrett
"Due to the destruction prior to 1869 of marriage records, deeds & wills in Buckingham Co., VA, where Stephen Garrott lived, attempts to reconstruct his family have been dependent upon the family records of his descendants who could be located. The marriage of Stephen Garrett to Magdalene Bernard was recorded in the Bible record of Vernon Greenwood Garrett, descendant of Absalom Garrett 31 (John 10, Stephen 8, John 1). This Bible record under * Births* gives the following: "John Garret, Sr., son of Stephen Garrett & Magdalene, his wife (whose name was Bernard) was born on 7th of May, 1755 and d. 3/29/1831 age 75 yr. 10 mo. 22 days. Hannah Garrett his wife (whose maiden name was Greenwood), was born 6/4/1759 and d. 12/16/1840 age 81 yr. 6 mo. 12 da." According to this branch of Stephen's family, Stephen was believed to have been born about 1705."[13]
Footnote 41: Garrett, "A Book," 215-217. Contributed by the Vernon Greenwood Garrett family to Hester E. Garrett Gerri Goodwin (another descendent of Elijah & Mary Casey Garrett)
