Thomas McKissick Garrett was born June 2, 1812 in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee to Nathan Odell Garrett and Ann Mary "Polly" (McKissick) Garrett.
He married 1) Margaret Minerva Reed on December 17, 1833. Together they became the parents of Mary Elizabeth (Garrett) McDowell Erskine, Cynthia Ann Garrett, Thomas McKissick Garrett Jr., and Robert Jasper Garrett.
He married 2) widow Linea Frances (Brandon) Cornelison on December 25, 1845. To this marriage she brought children Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Cornelison, Jesse Cornelison, James H. Cornelison who died prior to 1850, Miles Cornelison, and Benjamin Franklin Cornelison. Together they became the parents of Catherine Elizabeth (Garrett) Hickman, James Odell Garrett, Rhoda Ann (Garrett) Hodges, Sarah Ellen (Garrett) Hodges, Thomas Henry Garrett, Linea Frances "Fannie" (Garrett) Stone, and Nathan Willis Garrett.
Thomas died of measles and pneumonia on July 2, 1862 at Stranger, Falls Co., Texas and was buried at Garrett Cemetery in Falls Co., Texas.
When Thomas McKissick Garrett's estate was settled, the two surviving children of his first marriage received one-half of all property - real and personal - and shared equally with a one-ninth share of the remainder, with the seven minor children of his second marriage. Some of the original land of Thomas McKissick Garrett is still owned by his descendants in the Erskine and Garrett families, and many descendants continue to reside in Falls County.
