Colby was born in 1830 to George Washington Garrett and Elizabeth Dennis, the oldest of nine children. He lived in Johnson County, Arkansas his whole life, owned and worked his own farm. Colby fought in the Civil War, and later was denied voting rights. See Space:Garretts in the Civil War. He married Mary Jane Dunning at 22 years old and died at the age of 85.
