George Washington Garret was born in Garrett, Johnson, Arkansas to Leonard Jefferson Garrett and Elizabeth Logan Dunivan in 1844. He was born the 5th of six children and he and his family lived in the historical Garrett Valley of Johnson County. George's father Leonard who was a blacksmith at this time had come to this area in the 1820's with his father Wesley Garrett and settled near Wesley. This is in the Red Gin Road area of Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas.
In the year of 1863, George enlisted in the Civil War in Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas with Company "D", Gordon's Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry, Confederate States of Army. George served as a private until the end of the war in 1865. He served honorably with no pay during this time, and was always present for roll call.
Seven years after the close of the Civil War, George married Catherine Frances "Kate" Robinson of Clarksville, Johnson County, Arkansas 14 Mar 1872 in Johnson County, Arkansas. George and Kate lived in Spadra, Johnson, Arkansas after their marriage and had 2 daughters.
The oldest, Mary Ann, married Andrew J. Phillips, a thriving orchard producer from Springdale, Benton, Arkansas. Then their youngest, Sarah Jane, married a thriving farmer of Spadra, Johnson County, Arkansas, Wiley Jackson Harris.
During this time George was a farmer and eventually was stricken with one of the most painful medical problems known to humans, tic douloureux, a severe nerve pain on one side of the face. He was granted a pension in 1907 for his service during the Civil War. In 1911, George was granted an increase as he was a physical wreck and wholly unable for labor, considered to be disabled with tic douloureux, as well as liver and kidney problems.
George can be found along with his wife, living with their daughter Mary in the 1910 Census Records for Springdale, Benton, Arkansas, and also found in his pension increase filed in Johnson County, Arkansas in 1911. His probate, filed at the Clarksville, Johnson, Arkansas county courthouse, was administered by his son-in-law Wiley Jackson Harris or W.J. Harris. This probate record lists George as passing intestate on or about 4 Mar 1923, although his death record or burial location has not been located.
