Biography

Isaac's parents were John Garrett and Margaret Villars (Villiers). He was born in 1769. [1]

Isaac married Elizabeth "Betsy" McDowell on Dec. 12, 1794 in Shelby Co., Ky. [2][3] She was the daughter of Rachel and Charles McDowell.

Their eight children (as proven by various deeds)

"FANNY" Garrett married 7 Nov. 1819 Shelby Co., Ky., Eleazer Thomas. Her brother James was the bondsman at their marriage. Likewise, Eleazer Thomas was the bondsman when her sister "Eleanor" married in 1821. On 24 Nov. 1830, "ANN" and Eleazer Thomas sold all rights and interest in the Buck Creek land (Isaac Garrett had before he deceased), to Craven and Greenup Garrett. At the same time, Ann and Eleazer also sold their entire interest in the dower to Craven and Greenup Garrett Spencer Co Deed Book C, pages 5 & 6).
Helena/Eleanor Garrett, married Thomas Larkin. In the Spencer Co land transactions, she is always listed as "Helenna" but the Shelby Co transcriptions that I have seen for her marriage list her as "Eleanor". (I need to check the original Shelby Co marriage records.)
Cyrena Garrett, married William G. Hobbs (He may have been a minister as there are several marriages that were conducted by a Rev. William G. Hobbs.)
Greenup Garrett
Craven Garrett
Bluford Garrett
James M. Garrett (many land transactions)
Thomas M. Garrett married Lucy Ann Miles (d/o Lenar Whitaker and George Miles).

History of Kentucky at the Time

Few whites lived in What was to become Shelby Co., prior to 1779, however Isaac's Uncle William Garrett from Virginia had been part of the territorial settlement, working side by side with Squire Boone.

In December of 1775, William Garrett deposed that on..."July 16, 1775 he was a chain carrier for John Floyd was with him at a spring now called Preston's Cave spring and got him to survey land at a spring where Thomas Lewis was living in 1799 notwithstanding he saw JL carved on a tree and other improvement signs. William Meredith was with Col. Floyd in the summer of 1772 when he went around the lines of Shadrach Vaughn's military survey on North Elkhorn near Bryan's Station and Col. lsaac Shelby afterwards governor saw him at Boonesborough in Dec afterwards when he was going to Virginia he returned in May 1776." Collins' Historical Sketches of Kentucky: History of Kentucky, Volume 2

With the British victorious in both, settlers soon began to enter Kentucky. They came in defiance of a royal proclamation of 1763, which forbade settlement west of the Appalachians. Daniel Boone, the famous American frontiersman, first came to Kentucky in 1767; he returned in 1769 and spent two years in the area. A surveying party under James Harrod established the first permanent settlement at Harrodsburg in 1774, and the next year Boone, as agent for Richard Henderson and the Transylvania Company, a colonizing group of which Henderson was a member, blazed the Wilderness Road from Tennessee into the Kentucky region and founded Boonesboro. Title to this land was challenged by Virginia, whose legislature voided (1778) the Transylvania Company's claims, although individual settlers were confirmed in their grants.

Notes on Isaac Death

Several internet listings that indicate Isaac Garrett died 1830; however, this is an understandable error. Isaac was alive on 24 December 1811 (Date Isaac was the bondsman when his sister-in-law Sarah (McDowell) Reeves married her second husband Joel Warren in Shelby Co.) but was deceased by 11 March 1821 (date his daughter Hellena/Eleanor, married Thomas Larkin in Shelby Co.)

The lands where the McDowells and Garretts lived fell into Spencer Co when it was formed in 1824 from Shelby, Bullitt, and Nelson Counties.

Deeds in Spencer County say the wife and children thought it was desirable and for their best benefit, not to divide the land at Isaac's death and did not do so until 1830. When the land was finally divided in 1830, Thomas Garrett, who was probably the youngest child, was under age; so, his brother Craven was appointed as his guardian in order to sell the divided lands. It was because of this guardian appointment that many researchers assumed Isaac died in 1830 when in fact, he died several years earlier.

I think the birthplace is wrong. There were no permanent white settlements in Kentucky before 1774.
