  • By Rhitt Garrett: A genealogy gap between Isaac Burton Garrett and his two succeeding generations have long been uncertain or hypothesized and debated in Garrett genealogy circles. When I first got into genealogy research in 2006, I was given a set of genealogy notes from a deceased distant cousin (Beth Minatra Bryan) who was a prodigious and skilled researcher of Garrett Family history. Four typewritten pages of these notes ( which she said she developed by going herself to the William and Mary research library) document the relationships shown in this Tree. Too much to include all of it here, but some portions:

1. "When ISSAC made his will dated February 6, 1775 he was living in the parish of Dale, Chesterfield County, Virginia. He willed his 125 acres of land to his grandson SAMUEL with the provision his son JOHN could remain on the land until John died. This land does not appear to be any of the same land that ISAAC inherited from his father.

2. " My proof that SAMUEL was John's child is in the will of ISAAC GARRETT of Dale Parish, Chesterfield County,Virginia (Will Book 2, page 275-7 dated February 6, 1775):

"In the name of Eternal being who created the world by the power of his word and supports the same by knowing Dictates of His wisdom I, Isaac Garrot, being sick and weak of body, but of sound and perfect memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament.... "Impremus, I desire that my son JOHN GARROT may have the use of the plantation he now lives on during his life containing one hundred twenty five acres and at his death to his eldest son SAMUEL GARROT to him and his heirs forever...

"I give to my Daughter JUDEY Wilkinson five shillings in cash...

"I give to my son JOHN GARROT five shillings cash...
