Benjamin Garrett was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Post 1, Rockford, Illinois.

Benjamin was born in 1835 in Ohio. He was the son of Isle of Man immigrants Thomas Garrett and Margaret Kewish. The family moved to Guilford, Illinois before 1850. [1]

He married Esther Hayes in 1860. [2]

They had one son, Bruce Hayes Garrett, 1865-1932, m. Anna May Donaldson, 1891; Vera Gay, 1920.

Benjamin’s brother, Robert married Esther’s sister, Dilla.

Benjamin passed away in 1900. [3]

Civil War

In 1864 Benjamin enlisted with the Illinois 146th Infantry. He achieved the rank of sargeant and mustered out July 1865. [4] [5]

He was a member of the Rockford Grand Army of the Republic.[6]
