In 1862, brothers Humphrey Garrigues, William Henry Garrigues, Joseph Cruckshank Garrigues, and Samuel Briggs Garrigues returned to Pennsylvania with William's wife and daughter Gulielma Widdifield (Humphrey) Garrigues and Anna Humphreys Garrigues; Joseph's wife Anna (Humphreys) Garrigues; and Samuel''s wife Emma (Walker) Garrigues.

He purchased the Sunday School Times from the American Sunday School Union in 1861.

In 1862, he renamed the business J. C. Garrigues & Company.

In 1872, his health turned for the worse and he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane because he was "impared from overwork".

When his health improved, he was allowed to return to the city, but on March 4, he disappeared[1]. A reward of $100 was posted for information on his whereabouts.

On June 24, 1872, his body was found without arms or legs. It was thought he was run over by a train. He was identified by his gold shirt studs that looked like books.[2]

His brothers, William Henry Garrigues and Samuel Briggs Garrigues took over the business and renamed it Garrigues Brothers Publishers in 1875.
