Biography

Rebecca could have been born as early as 1770 (She was not mentioned in Samuel Garrigues's will of 1770, but was in the codacil of 1777) or as late as 1772. She is the daughter of John Garrigues and Sarah Unknown.

Her father seemed to have a touch and go relationship with the Quakers and it doesn't appear that her mother was ever actually a Quaker. (See his profile for details.) She requested membership in the Society of Friends in 1787 and then married a non-Quaker in 1791, so her time with the Quakers was quite brief.

We therefore testify that the said Rebecca Ellwood hath seperated herself from Membership with us, until she shall be favored to see the Error of her Conduct & make such Acknowledgement as the Nature of her Case requires, which that she may be qualified to do is our Desire for her[6]	Philadelphia[6], Pennsylvania
