Frank was born in Pennsylvania, no one is quite sure exactly where. By the time of the 1840 Census, his family was living in Turtle Creek Township, near Lebanon, Ohio, where his father had a farm and a carriage making business.
Most of what we know about Frank comes from his younger brother's journal (E.A. Garrison). Here is an example of one of Edwin's childhood memories:
"My bro Frank and I 1849, was amused in seeing in front of our house in the street a gander picking a little girl and the child crying. My bro Love, only five years old, ran out in the street and caught the gander by the neck and head and so frightened it that it ran off."
In the winter of 1852, Frank and his father, Thomas, traveled to Port Gibson, Mississippi to scout a new home for the family. Thomas called for his wife, Edwin, and the rest of the family soon after, and the family left Ohio for good in April 1852, traveling by carriage, train, and steamboat.
In Port Gibson, Thomas established another carriage making business, and then, in 1861, he purchased a cotton plantation, and became a planter. Frank and his brother became a part of the fabric of Southern life at the time, and the family owned about 80 slaves who worked the cotton fields.
Going back to Edwin's journal: "On July 24, 1851, Father and Frank went to Port Gibson and heard of the Battle of Bull Run, and great rejoicing over the victory."
"Bro Frank's health was bad, and many urged him not to go to war. He could not stand it. Frank felt the same, but was afraid some would say he was not in sympathy (with the Southern cause)."
Frank enlisted in Confederate Army, and served in Company K, 26 Mississippi Infantry as a Private, and later, as 2nd Lieutenant. He was captured at Nashville on December 16, 1864 after being wounded in the abdomen. While in custody, he died of his wounds January 4, 1865.
"My brother Frank was very partial to Miss Josie Stevens (Dr. Steven's daughter) and they were engaged and would have married, but Bro was killed in war, 1865."
