Biography
Betsey was born in 1815. Elizabeth Garrison (1814-1865)
Oren was still a boy when his parents moved from Vermont to Delaware Co., New York. He grew up, married Elizabeth Garrison (1814-1865), and moved to Linn Co., Iowa, in 1857. Oren appears on the 1870 census of Spencer Twp. in Clay Co., Iowa, in the home of his son, John S. Rice. He died July 16, 1872.
The children of Oren D. and Elizabeth (Garrison) Rice were:
1. ADELIA MARIA RICE (1834-1928); married Rufus Crane and lived near Spencer and Ruthven, Iowa. 2. JABEZ JUDSON RICE (1836-19310; see story below. 3. JOHN SHERMAN RICE (1838-1937) married Laura E. Melendy of Spencer Co., Iowa, and settled in Greenwood Co., Kansas. Children: Ernest G., Edna E. (m. Leaman L. Miller), Sally T. (d. age 20, unmarried), Myrtle (m. Thomas D. Broddle), Jacob A., William H., and Blanche M, who m. 1) Alex Blakely and 2) Patrick Cunningham. 4. RUBEN RICE, reported to have died at age 13. 5. SELPHINA E. RICE (1843-1912) who married Henry Fink, lived in Iowa and had 12 children. 6. ALVIN L. RICE, born in 1846, was a blacksmith at Lake City, Iowa, in 1900; he had a son, Clyde. 7. ADELBERT RUFUS RICE (1848-1944) married Harriet E. Erwin and settled in Greenwood Co., Kansas. Children: Clara M. (m. Leonidus Bate),b Clyde B., , Nellie L. (m. Charles E. Bate) and Ralph B. Rice. 8. SALLY RICE (1853-1864) is said to have died of diphtheria.
