Biography

Mary was born on 25 August 1859 in Northborough, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. She was the daughter of James Garrity and Bridget (Mullen) Garrity. [1]

In 1860, Mary was 9 months old living in Northborough where she was born. She was the first child of James (27 yrs) and Bridget (24 yrs). In 1860, she was their only child. [2]

The family moved from Northborough to Berlin some time between 1 July 1863 and 6 April 1865. Berlin is approximately 5 miles due North of Northborough. For a short discussion see the profile of Mary's father James Garrity.

In 1865, Mary was 6 years old and the family was living in Berlin. She was no longer the only child. She now had one brother John T. Garrity (6 yrs) and one sister Bridget Garrity (1 mo). Bridget Garrity became Delia Ellen Garrity by the 1870 Census. I'm not sure why the name changed occurred. See her profile for details. [3]

In 1870, the family continued to live in Berlin. Mary was now 10 years old and she had a new brother. Her siblings were John T. (8 yrs), Delia (5 yrs) and James (2 yrs). [4]

In 1880, the family continued to live in Berlin, Massachusetts. Mary was 20 years old. She gained two sisters since 1870. Her siblings were John T. (18 yrs), Delia (15 yrs), James (12 yrs), Nellie (9 yrs) and Agnes (4 yrs). [5]

In 1900, Mary was 40 years old. She had remained single and continued to live at home with her parents. She was working in a shoe shop as a stitcher. She had been unemployed for 2 months between the 1 January 1900 and 11 June 1900. Her youngest sibling Agnes Elizabeth was 23 years old also also living at home, also single and working in a shoe shop. She worked as a "hacker" (?). I'm not sure of the spelling or what this shoe shop task was. Rootsweb.ancestry.com lists a "Hacker" as someone who made hoes. Could she have been making farming or garden hoes in a shoe shop? I think that Berlin was a farming community. [6]

Their 4 siblings had moved out of the household since the 1880 Census and were living in other households. Frank was married, living in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Delia was married, living in Acton, Massachusetts. James S. was married, living in Fitchburg. And Nellie C. was married, continuing to live in Berlin, but in a different household.

The family household of James, Bridget, Mary and Agnes Garrity (Dwelling 101/Family 109) was living beside the family of Michael and Catherine Burke (Dwelling 102/Family 110), listed on the same page of the 1900 Federal Census. I mention this because I know that Mary's 1st cousin Nellie Elizabeth, also of Berlin, married a John W. Burke of Lancaster. I think the Burke family of Berlin was likely closely related to the Burke family of Berlin. Lancaster is about 7 miles north of Berlin. [7]

In 1907, Mary's brother Frank John Garrity died. In his obituary it stated that Mary was living in Malden, Massachusetts. His obituary is at the bottom of his WikiTree biography.

In 1910, Mary was boarding in the household of Edward M. Noyes, his wife Audie E. Noyes and his step-son Erma C. Beana on Ellis Avenue in Ward 1 of Malden, Middlesex. There were seven other boarders in the household. Mary was about 50 years old, not 45 as noted in the Census, but all the information matches what is expected - her name, including her middle initial of A, her marital status of single and her job as fore lady in a shoe factory. [8]

In 1920, Mary was 60 years old and it appears she still lived in Malden. Her first and last name, her age, her marital status of single, her occupation as a stitcher (and forewoman) in a boot factory, all noted in the 1920 Census, match expected information about her. She was living as a roomer in the household of James E. Andrews (54 yrs) on Judson Street in Ward 1 of Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Other members of the household were Nettie M. Andrews (53 yrs), wife of James, and Adeliza J. Andrews (78 yrs), mother of James. James was General Manager of the boot factory. [9]

In 1930, Mary was 70 years old and living in the household of Abbie H. Trow on Lincoln Street in Hudson, Massachusetts. [10]

In 1940, Mary was 80 years old and living with her brother-in-law James Arthur Douglas and her Niece Ruth in Hudson, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Mary's sister Agnes Elizabeth (Garrity) Douglas must have died prior to the 1940 Federal Census. [11]
