Birth and Baptism
John, the son of James Garrad and his wife Prudence, née Baker, who had been married at Ipswich in 1682,^[1] was born at Whatfield, Suffolk in 1701 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 1 May 1701.^[2]

Children
John and Susan had eight children:

1. John, born at Whatfield in 1724 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 19 April 1724.^[3] John died when he was about nine years old and was buried at Whatfield on 9 December 1733.^[4]
2. Susan born at Whatfield in 1726 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 28 January 1725/6.^[5]
3. Mary born at Whatfield in 1727 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 5 November 1727.^[6]
4. Elizabeth born at Whatfield in 1729 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 4 November 1729.^[7]
5. Saul born at Whatfield in 1732 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 27 August 1732.^[8]
6. Amy born at Whatfield in 1735 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 16 March 1735.^[9]
7. Rachel born at Whatfield in 1737 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 14 September 1737.^[10] Rachel died when she was just over one year old and was buried at Whatfield on 26 November 1738.^[11]
8. John born at Whatfield in 1739 and baptized at St Margaret's church, Whatfield, on 26 December 1739.^[12]

Research Notes

Based on the original family tree, they had a daughter Amy born in Suffolk, but his wife's name was Susannah.^[13]

Possible marriages:

1. J Garrard to Su Cage at Offton, Suffolk, in 1723.^[15]
2. John Garrod, of Creeting All Saints, to Susan Ralfe at Ipswich St Peter on 23 Aug 1724.^[16]

I'm inclined to rule out the latter because:

a) it is later than the baptism of the first child in the biography above; and

b) there are children born at Creeting all Saints to John and Susan in the same time period, e.g. Elizabeth (1730), ^[17]Ann (1734),^[18], Sarah (1737),^[19] and Thomas (1738/9).^[20]
