Biography

John was christened on 05 June 1807 in Shotley, Suffolk, England. He was the son of Benjamin Garrod and Lydia Frost. ^[1]

John married Diana Podd Rance on 11 November 1840 in Woolverstone, Suffolk, a village roughly 10 km from Shotley. ^[2]

It would seem, though, that they had been together for some years before 1840. The census of England and Wales carried out in 1841 shows their household in Woolverstone as consisting of: ^[3]

— John Garrod, male, aged between 30 and 34, born in Suffolk

— Diana Garrod, female, aged between 30 and 34, born in Suffolk

— Diana Garrod, female, aged between 15 and 19, born in Suffolk

— John Garrod, male, aged 5, born in Suffolk

— Catherane Garrod, female, aged 3, born in Suffolk

— William Garrod, male, aged 1, born in Suffolk

— John Denny, male, aged between 65 and 69, born in Suffolk

— Mary Denny, female, aged between 55 and 59, born in Suffolk

— Robert Denny, male, aged between 15 and 19, born in Suffolk

— William Denny, male, aged between 15 and 19, born in Suffolk

There were further children:

• Sarah Garrod, born on 12 June 1841 and christened in Woolverstone on 15 June 1841 ^[4]
• Lydia Garrod, christened on 30 April 1843 in Shotley, Suffolk ^[5]

By the time of the 1851 census Diana was living on London Road, Ipswich, Suffolk as a servant in the household of William Bayly. ^[6] Although she called herself Diana P Garrod, she is listed as unmarried.

The same 1851 census finds John living with Catherine and Lydia on Duke Street, Ipswich. The record says:

— John Garrod, head, male, Labourer at Foundry, aged 44, born in Shotley, Suffolk

— Catherine Garrod, daughter, female, aged 13, born in Shotley

— Lydia Garrod, daughter, female, aged 7, born in Shotley

By the time of the 1881 census John was a widower. He was, at the age of 74, living with the family of John and Eliza Horne; his role is given as "uncle", his occupation as "Gardener", but his identity is confirmed by the fact that he was born in Shotley. ^[7]

Research Notes

Various other newborns might look as though they should belong to the same family, but the evidence is not sufficiently convincing:

There was a Clara Garrod, daughter of John and Dinah, who was christened on 12 March 1837 in Beccles, Suffolk. ^[8] In view of the fact that this was three years before John and Diana's marriage, it is quite possible that this was a different couple altogether.

• There is a Mary Anne Garred, christened on 12 April 1857 in Benhall, Suffolk ^[9]There is quite a large gap between the christenings of Lydia and Mary Ann, and the surname is spelt slightly differently. There is also an Alice Garred ^[10] christened in 1873. Although their parents are John and Diana Garred, we are probably talking about a different couple.
