Biography

Caroline Garrod was born about 1820. She was the daughter of Thomas Garrod and Elizabeth unknown. Caroline was christened on the 26th November 1820 in SIble Hedingham, Essex, England. ^[1] In 1841, Caroline was still living with her parents and siblings in Hedinghma-Sible. ^[2] Caroline was still living with her parents at the age of 30 in Swan Street, Sible Hedingham. Her occupation was in domestic duty. ^[3]

Caroline had at least two children out of wedlock. She may have never married. Her first child, Eve was born in 1853. Her son, Adam, was born a couple of years later. By 1861, Caroline was the head of her household with her two children. They were living in Sible Hedingham. ^[4]

In 1864, Caroline's daughter, Eva, gave evidence as a witness to the murder of an accused witch, who was only known as Dummy. He was an 80-year-old deaf and mute man who was beaten and eventually drowned in the brook near the local public house, the Swan. ^[5]
