Biography

Cassandra Garrott was born about 1764 at Frederick County, Maryland. This estimate is based on her age (73) when she died in March 1838. [1] She was the youngest daughter of John Garrott and Elizabeth Unknown. [2]

On 21 September 1775 (probated 15 May 1776), her father wrote a will in Frederick County, Maryland (Frederick County Will Book A, pages 571-573). John Garrott did not name his wife, so, apparently, Cassandra’s mother had already died:[2]

"I Bequeath to my Daughter Cassania Garrett, one Negro Girl named Nan . . . I bequeath to my Daughter Cassania, one Brindle Cow & her yearling Calf. one Spotted Sow, three Sheep 1 BedStead 1 Bed with striped Ticking Bed furniture & a Rug to be bought for her. 1 small pott, that is at the place called Brothers Good Will Two old plaites two new ones & two Tin Panns."

Four of John Garrott’s children were unmarried and still living at home. He made provisions for the four of them to remain in the family home:

"I Bequeath all my Corn & Fodder and forty Bushells of Wheat one Black Cow and twenty eight Hogs for the use of my Children my Son Bartin, my Son Allen, my Daughter Elizabeth & my Daughter Cassania Garrett to be equally divided among betwixt them four. I Bequeath my bay Horse Called Ranger, my two Oxen & Cart to my Son Allen my Daughter Elizabeth & my Daughter Cassania use as long as they tarry together on this place but when my Daughters leaves this place then they are to become my Son Allen’s. I bequeath to my four Children, my Son Bartin & Allen my Daughter Elizabeth and Cassania, all my Crop of Tobacco to cloath themselves and the Negroes to be equally divided betwixt them four. I bequeath also to my Son Bartin my Son Allen my Daughter Elizabeth & my Daughter Cassania to be equally divided amongst them four, all my Cloathes & wearing Apparell, Country Cloth and Ozenbrigs."

On 3 December 1781, Zachariah Philpott and Cassandra Garrott obtained a marriage license in Frederick County, Maryland. They married on that date or soon after. Zachariah was 22 years old, and Cassandra was 16. [3] [4] Zachariah’s uncle, Barton Philpott, had purchased land in Frederick County at about the same time as John Garrott; they were neighbors. Cassandra’s sister, Elizabeth, married Zachariah’s brother, Charles Thomas.

Cassandra’s brother, Edward Garrett of Montgomery County, Maryland, named his sister, Casandra Philpot, in his will, written 5 February 1785 (probated 10 March 1785). [5]

Cassandra Philpott died 14 March 1838 at Cumberland County, Kentucky, She was 73 years old. [1] She was buried in the Philpot Cemetery at Wash’s Bottom, Cumberland County, Kentucky. [1] [6]

"Miss Maggie" Philpott, author, was a great-granddaughter of Zachariah Philpott and Cassandra Garrott. She made a record of their descendants. It was written in long-hand, and, later, typed up as a booklet by an unknown person. One of the original booklets was given to Agnes Ollerdessen circa 1966 by a descendant still living in Kentucky.
