Biography

Joseph Garrott was born 15 October 1778 (Bible record) at Frederick County, Maryland.[1][2] He was a son of Barton Garrott and Ann Butler Gray.

Joseph was, likely, one of the 3 males under age 16, living in the household of his father, on the 1790 U.S. Census, at Frederick County.[3]

Joseph Garrott married Ann Franklin before 1801, probably at Frederick, or Charles County, Maryland. They were first cousins—Joseph was a son of Ann Butler Gray (married Barton Garrott), and Ann was a daughter of Benedicta Gray (married Zephaniah Franklin). On the 1800 U.S. Census, Joseph Garret appeared as Head of Household at District 3, Frederick County. It appears that Joseph and Ann were newly married.[4] His household included:

  • 1 male age 16-25
  • 1 female age 16-25
  • 3 slaves

Joseph’s mother died in April 1802. On 1 February 1803, Joseph’s father, in case he should die intestate, sold to Joseph 340 acres—part of Fieldera Manor, part of The Resurvey on Maryland, and the tract called Horse Shoe.[5] Barton Garrott died, intestate, in August 1804. On 23 August 1804, at Frederick County, Joseph was appointed administrator of his estate. Joseph’s first cousin, John Philpott Garrott, and David Levy were securities.[6]

On 21 September 1803, at Charles County, both Joseph Garrot and his wife, Ann Garrot, were named in the final settlement of the estate of their maternal grandmother, Hannah Gray. Hannah’s estate was divided between her son, Joseph Gray, and the children of her deceased daughters, Benedicta Franklin and Ann Butler Garrott.[7]

Joseph was probably the "J. Garrott" listed as Head of Household on the 1810 U.S. Census at Frederick County.[8] His household included:

  • 1 male age 45 and over
  • 1 male age 26-44
  • 2 males under age 10
  • 1 female age 26-44
  • 1 female under age 10
  • 13 slaves

Joseph was about 32 years old. The identity of the male age 45 and over is unknown.

Joseph died, intestate, 16 July 1816,[1][2] at Frederick County. He was 37 years old. He was buried in the Garrott Family Cemetery at Knoxville, Frederick County.[2]

Children of Joseph Garrott and Ann Franklin:[9]

  • William Garrott (1803-1866) married #1 Sarah Ann Flanigan and #2 Hannah Boteler
  • Francis Boucher Garrott (b abt 1805 Frederick County, MD, d 1842 Callaway County, MO)--after his death, his wife, Lucy H., married his brother-in-law, Alpheus McCubbin
  • Mariah Garrott marr Alpheus McCubbin (b abt 1806 Frederick County, MD, d betw 1850-July 1853 Callaway County, MO)--after her death, her husband married the widow of her brother, Francis B. Garrott
