Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Daniel Garry is a part of US Black heritage.

Daniel's son Henry Garry was interviewed in Birmingham, Alabama on 6/8/1937 about his life and his time as an enslaved person.

"Lawd, man, I was bawn in de back yahd whar Marse John Rogers live right now. Dat was right atter de surrender an' my mammy b'long to de Vandegraaf family who useter live dar an' owned all dat plantation. My daddy's name was Daniel Grady. Dey come fum Virginny long time 'fo' de wah."


Interview: Henry Garry was interviewed in Birmingham, Alabama by W F Jordan as part of the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The results are made available by the Library of Congress. [1]


Henry's interviewer typed Daniel's surname as "Grady". Henry thought his parents were from Virginia, although the 1870 census says they were born in Alabama.
