James served his apprenticeship as a coach body builder in the Derby carriage works, after which he went to work in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire. In the early 1890s, the railway works at Wolverton was expanding and a number of men were transferred from Derby to Wolverton. Information from David Marks.
In 1893, at the time of his father's death, James was living in lodgings at 20 Aylesbury Street, Wolverton, Buckinghamshire.
He moved to 43 Anson Road, Wolverton, which was a shop kept by a widow, Mary Anne (Polly) Elliott, whom he later married.
After their marriage, James and Polly bought a house at 3 Osborne Street, Wolverton.
James was ill for about 12 months before he died.
