Biography

Henry James Garth was born on 25 Jul 1847 in Port Cygnet, Van Dieman's Land, Australia. His birth was registered in Hobart Town. He was the son of James Garth (1818-1880), farmer of Port Cygnet, and Elizabeth Garth (1820-abt.1861). According to his birth register, he was baptised by the Rev. Fry.[1]

Henry married widow Ruth Wilson (nee Stewart) when he was 37 and Ruth was 35 on 5th September 1884 in the Wesleyan Church by Rev Henry E. Merriman. Witnesses to the marriage where Mary Ann Smith and Hannah Paull. [2] Ruth already had 3 children from her previous marriage to William Wilson, 2 sons and a daughter: Samuel Joseph (1872), Mary Ruth (1874) and William John (1875).

Henry and Ruth had another 6 children. Ruth having her last child when she was about 43. Five children born in Tasmania and their last was born in Victoria. Their children were: Harold Henry (1885-1967), Edgar James (1887-1960), Irene Grace (1888-1968), Ralph Bernard (1889-1971), Norman Stuart (1890-1977) and Athol Roy (1893- )

Between 1890 and 1893, they moved from Tasmania to Victoria. Unable to find a ship's passenger list that mentions them at the present time. Their last child, Athol Roy Garth was born in 1893, the birth registered in Carlton, Victoria.

Henry worked as a farmer in Port Cygnet. After he moved to Victoria he was listed as a contractor, Carpenter and then builder [3]

He died about 16th January 1929 in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia. [4] He is buried at the Pine Lodge Cemetery, Coburg, Victoria. [5]
