Thomas, baptized 29 September 1664 at Gainford, Durham, England, was the son of William and Mary Garth.[1][2]
It was probably when he was serving in the British Army in Barbados that he met and married Elizabeth Colleton, daughter of Thomas Colleton. They had children John, [3] James, and Mary (m. George Evelyn and Charles Boone), as well as two sons, both named Thomas, who died as children. [2] They made their home in London, although he owned estates in Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire.
Thomas Garth wrote his Will on 15 June 1728. He left his wife Elizabeth an annuity and their house in London for life. His estates were left to his son John, with default heirs being his son James, nephew Bowes Garth (son of his brother William Garth), cousins John and Thomas Garth (sons of his deceased cousin Thomas Garth), nephews John and Samuel Cowling, and the younger children of his niece Bufoy [Beaufoy] Boyle. He also mentions his three granddaughters Anne, Elizabeth, and Mary Evelyn.[4]
He died 7 January 1730/1 and was buried 11 January in Westminster Abbey, London.[2]
