  • James Garth was born on Jul. 6, 1807 in Low Row Grinton Parish Swaledale, England and died on Jan. 10, 1865 in Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, USA. He is buried just North of the Rockdale Methodist church. He married Mary Whitfield [Garth] on Oct. 22, 1833 in Grinton Parish Church Swaledale England. Mary, daughter of William Whitfield and Sarah Pratt [Whitfield] , was born in 1811 in Low Row (Smarber Chapel) England - Grinton Swaledale and died on Feb. 11, 1886 in Woolstock, Wright, Iowa, USA.

James came from Swaldale England on the ship Benjamin Adams in 1853 with his wife Mary (Whitfield) Garth, and 7 children. Two more children were born in Dubuque, IA. James younger brother Ralph emigrated to America and earned enough money mining lead at the Mines of Spain, Dubuque that he loaned James $500 to bring his family. They all did very well having been lead miners for the Lord of the land in England. They knew how to smelt the ore and were able to keep 90% of the money and 10% went to the local government. Mary and family moved to Wright, Co. IA after James buggy was thrown into a fence post when his horse bolted. He was going to get his hair cut. Rest in Peace, Gone but not forgotten.
