Biography

John Garton was one of eight transportees in a headright grant for 366 acres on Mockjack Bay, Gloucester County, Virginia, granted to John Benson on April 10, 1667. (Cavaliers & Pioneers Vol. II, pg. 21)

He may be the same John Garton who was baptized in Leicester, England on March 26, 1648, the son of Richard and Catherine Garton, given that he named his own eldest son and daughter Richard and Catherine.

John Garton sealed his will on June 17, 1698. Probate papers in 1701 names his daughter Katherine, wife of Thomas Petty, among others. It has been long hypothesized that his parents were William Garton and Margaret Angell but no proof has been found of this. Given that John Garton already had several grandchildren by the time of his death (per probate records of his son), and William and Margaret Angell Garton weren't married until 1659 or later (per her father's will of that year that gives her maiden name), it is virtually impossible that John Garton is their child.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

It seems unlikely that John Garton is a son of William Garton. John Garton had a son named Richard who according to probate records of 1701 had died leaving four children. This means that Richard had to have been born no later than about 1675, and John Garton had to have been born around 1655 or earlier. But Margaret Angell, his supposed mother, was still unmarried as of her father William's will in October 1659 (she was called Margaret Angell). So these would have to be VERY crunched generations if this story is correct, with John Garton being born around 1661, Richard around 1678, and Richard's first child around 1696 at the very latest. It's possible, but it seems more likely that this relationship is just wrong.

John Garton-5 born 1661 cannot be the father of William Garton-2 born 1635
