Rafaela Garza was born in El Capote, Texas on 12 February 1903 to Alejandro Garza and Maria Tijerina. Not many records exist about her life. She is 7 years old in the 1910 Census; she lives with her parents and 3 other siblings on a farm. She speaks Spanish, attends school, and is able to read.[1] In the 1920 Census, she is 16 years old and lives with her parents and 7 younger siblings in McAllen, Texas. She attended school and can speak English.[2] At some point in the next 8 years, she married Gustave Hanson. They had 1 son, Robert, who died as a toddler 5 months before her death. Rafaela died of tuberculosis at the age of 25 on 10 August 1928. At the time, she was a homemaker. She was buried at La Piedad Cemetery in McAllen, Texas.[3]
