Biography

The sixth William Gascoigne in the pedigree by Thoresby married Matilda da & heiress of John de Gawkesthorp (ake Gawesthorpe), and granddaughter of Henry de Gauketorp, by ……his wife, daughter and heiress of …….Hillum.

The old seat of the Gawkthorpes, of Gawthorpe, was a residence when Herewode (Harewood) was what its name indicates. Its name is associated with all the interest, glamour, and romance that should pertain to this one time feudal hall. [1]

It appears that this William is shown with the incorrect spouse.

According to The Visitation of Yorkshire in 1584/5 made by Robert Glover (pg. 238), William Gascoigne, of Gawthorpe, son of William Gascoigne, of Harewood, and Elizabeth, dau. and heir of William Bolton, married Margaret, dau. and heir of Nicholas Frank. There is no mention of him marrying a Matilda.

Note also that the "Gascoyne Family Tree website" shown in the footnotes states that William Gascoigne who married Matilda (Jane) Gawkethorpe was the father of the William Gascoigne who married Elizabeth De Bolton. In The Visitation of Yorkshire in 1584/5 (linked above), pretty much the same thing is shown, whereas William Gascoigne, of Harewood, co., York, married Maude, dau. and heir of John Gawthorpe, of Gawthorpe, and were the parents of the William who married Elizabeth Bolton.

Gascoigne-442 and Gascoinge-9 appear to represent the same person because: Similar birth date in same place. Same death date in same area. Same mother. Will have same father when proposed merges of previous generations are completed. Married to same person. They are part of duplicate lines. One profiles is completely lacking sources.
