Biography

During his lifetime, Newell mostly worked as a sawyer.[1][2] He also worked as a seaman during some periods of his life, including on the ship "Breadalbane".[3][2] He had numerous children with Isabella Barr; she declined to state when she was married to Newell in an 1863 deposition and it is possible they never legally married.[1] Newell passed away in 1864 from injuries he sustained after falling down a flight of stairs while drunk.[2]

Research Notes

Newell's country of origin is unknown. Low-quality scans of his death certificate on Ancestry family trees show that no parents or birth location are listed on it.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Newell by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Newell:

Hi there. I'm currently researching Newell (I'm his great great great granddaughter) and have the following information to add that I received from St Patrick's cathedral which holds Newell's burial records. They found the following (note the name Louis as father for Mary):

1. Buried 1863 Mary 3yrs daughter of Louis & Isabella Gascoigne 2. Buried 1864 Newell Gascoigne 40yrs 3. Baptised 1850 *Isabella daughter of Noel & Isabella (Barr) Gascon 4. Baptised 1850 Noel child of couple above. 5. Baptised 1858 Benjamin 2yrs 1mth 23dys son of Newil & Isabella (Hooper) Gascon 6. Baptised 1859 Maria 3wks daughter of Noel & Elizabeth Gascon

Confirmed 1861 *Isabella Gascoine taking names 'Mary Josephine' Married 1864 *Isabella Gascoyne & Antonio Josef

Happy to share information with anyone else who has an interest in Newell (or Noel!) or his children - Newell Jnr and Benjamin seem to have ended up in Australia and didn't die in infancy as some trees suggest.
