Biography

Hannah was born in 1862. [1]

She died on 25 Dec 1921; her obituary in the Western Morning News read: [2]

LADY CARKEEK'S DEATH - MANY SERVICES TO CORNWALL
We regret to record the death of Lady Hannah Carkeek, J.P., wife of Sir Arthur Carkeek of Penventon, Redruth, on Christmas morning. Deceased had only been in ill-health for about a month, and the new of her death will be received with the greatest regret by all classes of the community.
While in London with her husband a month or so ago, Lady Carkeek complained of feeling unwell and on returning home her condition did not materially improve. Last Wednesday she was removed to a nursing home, and the following morning underwent an operation, which, however, proved unavailing, and she died in the presence of her husband and members of her family.
BENEFICENT WORK
A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Gaskill, Lady Carkeek was born in 1862, and married in 1884, since when she had resided in Redruth, and for the past 30 years at Penventon. She was a keen supporter of county and local benificent works, and devoted herself energetically to assisting the various charitable and other institutions in Redruth and district.
Her valuable services as a member for 30 years, and latterly as president, of the Redruth Sick Relief Committee brought her in close contact with the poorer classes of the town, to whom she was a never-failing friend. Deceased always took a prominent part in the organization of the committee's annual efforts, and this year, assisted by her daughters (Mrs. Rowse and Miss P. Carkeek), was engaged almost up to the last in making preparations for the effort to be held in the Druid's Hall to-morrow on behalf of the committee's funds. Deceased also took a keen interest in the West Cornwall Miners' and Women's Hospital, Redruth.
Among other activities, Lady Carkeek was a member of the Management Committee of Tehidy Sanatorium and of the County Tuberculosis Committee, president of Redruth Girl Guides, and a governor of Redruth County School for Boys and Camborne County School for Girls.
WORK FOR LIBERALISM
An ardent supporter of the Liberal party, deceased had rendered great service to the cause, and during the last election ably assisted her husband in his campaign as Liberal candidate for the Penryn-Falmouth Division. She was a member of the council of the Devon and Cornwall Liberal Federation, a vice-president of the Camborne Divisional Liberal Association, and president of the Redruth Women's Liberal Association.
In October Lady Carkeek was appointed a county magistrate in recognition of valuable service rendered in numerous directions for many years. She took her seat on the East Penwith Bench on one occasion only. During her illness deceased was engaged as a member of the county committee acting under the direction of the Lord-Lieutenant, in the organization of collections towards the funds to provide a wedding present from residents of the county for Princess Mary.
Lady Carkeek leaves a widower and three sons - Messrs. A. Leslie Carkeek and F. J. Carkeek (Redruth) and B. M. Carkeek (Nigeria) - and two daughters - Mrs. R. S. Rowse and Miss P. Carkeek.
Sympathetic reference to Lady Carkeek's death was made at the services in Redruth (Fore-street) United Methodist Church, with which deceased was actively connected, on Sunday by the Revs. B. A. A. Batt and S. Spencer (circuit minsters).
The funeral takes place this morning, the service being held at Fore-street United Methodist Church.
