According to Colby et. al. 2010, Founder-effect disorders with higher frequency in French Canadians attributed to Tyrosinaemia type I (hepatorenal tyrosinaemia) of the autosomal recessive type can cause cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (cancer of the liver), and other debilitating and painful effects, occurs on a worldwide basis and in as many as one 6,806 in some regions of Scandinavia. In the Saguenay/Lac St-Jean area of Québec as many as one in 6,846 newborns is affected with one in 22 being a carrier. French-Canadian tyrosinaemia victims can be traced to one couple, Louis Gagné and Marie Michel, who passed it on to some of their nine children and many grandchildren, at least two of whom moved to Charlevoix and on to Chicoutimi.[16]

"A successful attempt was made to trace one ancestral pair common to the 29 families studied. The pair was determined to be Louis Gagne and his wife Marie Michel, whom we know to have been in Quebec City in 1644."
