Biography

Louis GASSION was father of the famous singer-songwriter Édith Piaf, was a French circus artist and singer.^[1][2]

Louis Alphonse was born on 10 May 1881 at his parents' home, Faubourg Saint-Laurent in Falaise. He was the son of Victor Alphonse Gassion, horseman, 30 years old, and Léontine Louise Descamps, 20, his wife.^[3]

He married Annetta Giovanna Giovanna Maillard on 4 September 1914 at Sens (Yonne).^[3] The couple later divorced.^[4]

Louis Gassion died on 3 March 1944, at home, 84 rue Rébeval in Paris (19th arrondissement).^[4]

Research notes

After divorcing Annetta Maillard, Louis Gassion was said to have remarried, to Jeanne L'Hôte, in the early 1930s. This second marriage is not mentioned on his birth act or on his death act. While this is not a proof (the birth act is missing the mention of Gassion's divorce with Annetta Maillard, and Annetta's name is mispelt on the death act), it likely indicates that the marriage did not in fact take place.
