Biography

Michael Gassmann was born in Erie County, New York, about 1851 as the son of immigrant farmers. By 1860 the family had moved to Dubuque County, Iowa^[1][4]. Michael died in 1918 and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Holy Cross, Dubuque County, Iowa, USA^[3].

Notes

The birth date and picture appear in numerous trees on Ancestry.com, such as the JOCHUM Family of Dubuque County, Iowa^[2], but could not be authenticated. Find-A-Grave^[3] gives the birth year as 1852; consecutive US census data in 1860^[4], 1870^[5], 1880^[6], 1900^[7] and 1910^[8] list his age as 9, 19, 29, 48 and 57, respectively. On the preponderance of evidence the most likely year of birth is 1851.
