John was born in 1779 in South Carolina. His parents were Hugh Gaston and Martha McClure. His father was a veteran soldier of the Revolutionary War.
On July 28, 1807, John Gaston married Mary Kirkpatrick with whom he had nine known children:

Around 1815, John emigrated with his growing family west and settled in Wilcox County, Alabama around 1825. There he built a large plantation home in 1830. Once settled, John's parents came to live out their days. John Gaston being a lifelong Presbyterian; built the first Presbyterian church in Wilcox County.
John Gaston departed this life on October 21st 1855 at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 11 days old. He was buried in old Shell Creek Cemetery near his parents and several of his siblings.

John Gaston III, son of Hugh and Martha [née McClure] Gaston, was born in Chester, South Carolina. He was named for his paternal grandfather John Gaston, well known Justice of the Peace for the Chester District, South Carolina; first appointed by King George III and retained that position during the revolutionary war.
