Biography

William Gaston was the second son of John Gaston and Jannet Knox. His parents were both from Scots-Irish backgrounds; whose families had emigrated to America in search of religious freedom and the promise of land. Both of his grandfathers, John Gaston, Sr. and James Knox would serve as the Justice of the Peace for Chester District, South Carolina. William was named for his uncle William Gaston, who along with other Gaston & Knox relations would be remembered for their fight in the patriotic cause of independence.

William was educated alongside his siblings, James, Elizabeth and Esther, at Cedar Shoals Academy started by their paternal grandmother, Esther Waugh Gaston. Here he formed a close relation with other cousins and neighborhood children.

William Gaston married Sarah Weir, daughter of John and Mary Weir[1]. This union had the following known children: John Gaston (1792-1835 ) Rachel Gaston Blanton (1804–1893)

William Gaston is mentioned in his father's Last Will & Testament, dated July 21st 1803 and probated July 21st 1808. William departed this life sometime 1808.

Note: There are conflicting records regarding William ever marrying, but in the Last Will & Testament of John Weir, dated May 13, 1801... "I bequest to my son-in-law William Gaston and Sarah, my daughter one hundred and twelve acres.... to my grandson, John Gaston, one years schooling, including boarding." It is believed that young John Gaston moved to Kentucky and married his first cousin, Margaret Wear
