Ebenezer Gaston, son of Hugh Gaston and the Martha McClure, was born at the family home on the 10th day of April 1782 in Richburg, South Carolina. He was the second of six children. His family were well known patriots in the South Carolina efforts during the war for independence.
Ebenezer was educated a the local grammar school started by his maternal grandmother, Esther Waugh Gaston and graduated from Lancaster Academy in nearby Lancaster, South Carolina.
Ebenezer never married and lived with his parents; helping them with their extensive plantation; until around 1825 when they moved to Wilcox County, Alabama.
In the later part of 1840, Ebenezer emigrated to western Mississippi around Chickasaw and became a land spectulator; purchasing over 320 acres. In 1852, he gave 160 acres to the Board of Supervisors to start Calhoun County and located the county seat of Pittsboro on that land.
The 1860 U.S. Census, shows Ebenezer Gaston having a worth of $50,000 in real estate & $25,000 in personal property.
