Hugh was born in 1792 in South Carolina in Chester District. His parents were Hugh Gaston and Martha McClure. His father was a veteran soldier of the Revolutionary War from South Carolina.

James Hugh Gaston was the son of Hugh and Martha (McClure) Gaston. He married 1833 Winnie Adeline Kee, the daughter of Martin and Eleanor (Daniel) Kee. They had five children: James M. Gaston (1834-1863) Sarah Adeline Gaston (1836-1911) Hugh William Gaston (1840-1864) Harriet Emmaline Gaston (1841-1854) John Ebenezer Gaston (1858-1941)
In later 1840, Hugh Gaston purchased 320 acres in the area around Chickasaw, Mississippi and moved his family. Here he became a prosperous farmer until his death in 1869.
