Thomas is supposed to have been born about 1655. His parents may have been John Gatchell & "Wibera." He wasn't included in the will of Samuel Gatchell of Salisbury, Massachusetts, who had children about the same time Thomas was probably born. He was tailor, according to deeds and his will.
Although some clerks recording information about this family in the 17th and early 18th centuries spelled their last name "Gatchel" (also Getchel, Getchell, etc.), Thomas and his son John spelled the name "Gatchell" when they signed their wills.[1] The name in the copy of the will in the probate volumes is mistranscribed as "Gatchel."[1] The Dartmouth town clerk recording son John's birth and the deaths of his parents also spelled the name "Gatchell."[2] A different and earlier clerk spelled it "Gatchel" when recording the birth of Priscilla.[3] The published vital records mistakenly say that the original town records of these two births both have the spelling "Gatchel."[4]
